Athlete, Friend, Teammate

Curtis Schurkamp

The Curtis Schurkamp Scholarship honors the legacy of a two-time NCAA All-American and proud SF State alum who gave so much to the sport of wrestling.

In the Fall 2024 a named scholarship endowment was spearheaded by Curtis's brother, Tommy Schurkamp. Curtis attended Escalon High School where he was a California High School state finalist and 3x medal winner. He went on to pursue his wrestling career at both Fullerton State and SF State where he became a 2X NCAA AllAmerican. In his final run at the NCAA Championships, he impressively came back from an early loss, winning five matches in a row to take third in the country. During his time at State, he was known as an amazing friend, athlete, and teammate.

Curtis was the youngest of 6 children and was a very family-oriented man. He treasured the time that he got to spend with them outdoors, camping and fishing. His goal was to provide the best life for his son Raeden and wife Whitney, as they meant more to him than anything else. Everyone that had the pleasure to spend time with Curtis knows the amount of joy he brought into this world.

Every November SF State co-hosts the Curtis Schurkamp Day of Wrestling in Sacramento, CA

The Curtis Schurkamp Day of Wrestling is more than a series of events; it is a celebration of a legacy and a commitment to the future of the sport. Established to honor the memory of Curtis Schurkamp, the day brings together athletes, coaches, alumni, and supporters from across Northern California in a powerful show of community and shared purpose.

By showcasing high-level collegiate wrestling in Sacramento and offering young athletes access to advanced instruction, the event fosters growth and inspiration at every level of the sport. Just as importantly, it raises critical support for the Curtis Schurkamp Scholarship, ensuring that Curtis’s dedication to empowering student-athletes continues to impact future generations. What began as a memorial has grown into a unifying tradition—one that strengthens wrestling in Northern California while keeping alive the values of hard work, opportunity, and community that defined Curtis’s life.

By contributing to this scholarship fund, you’re not just helping a wrestler—you’re investing in a student’s education, a team’s future, and the continued growth of wrestling in California.

Why Growing this Endowment Matters

The most financially stable programs in the country have endowments that support their coaching positions and/or athletic scholarship. For us, this is about building prowess today, AND a legacy.

An endowed fund is invested, and then our program draws 4% annualy to support current use scholarship. In this way, the fund exists in perpetity to honor the namesake of the scholarship and to support our program.

Endowed funds are contractually bound to support our wrestling student athletes for generations to come. There is a legal contract with the main donor that exists within the unvieristy.

At SF State we are committed to the long-term stewardship of this, and ensuring our ability ty to suceed today as well as stbalizing our program for the future.
